Jay passed away on 7/13/2025, at the age of 55. While his passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who loved him, his life was one that could never be measured quietly. He lived boldly, loved deeply, and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Jay never met a stranger. Whether it was someone he'd known for years or someone he'd just met in line at the grocery store, he had a remarkable gift for making people feel like old friends. His booming voice and larger-than-life personality made him impossible to forget. He loved to joke, tease, and make people smile, and he could light up a room simply by walking into it.

Animals were not just something Jay loved—they were his life's passion. Throughout his early career, he worked with some of nature's most incredible creatures, including large cats, snakes, and alligators. He proudly ran alligator shows, sharing his knowledge, respect, and fascination for wildlife with countless people. His fearlessness, confidence, and deep appreciation for animals inspired everyone who watched him work.

His heart also belonged to the outdoors. He found peace at the beach, where the sound of the waves and the warmth of the sun brought him happiness. He embraced adventure, loved being outside, and rarely turned down an opportunity to make memories. Spontaneity wasn't something he planned—it was simply the way he lived.

A devoted fan of the Miami Dolphins, Jay cheered for his team with unwavering loyalty and enthusiasm. Win or lose, he wore his Dolphins pride proudly.

Those who knew Jay will remember his generous heart, unforgettable sense of humor, great taste in music, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. He was an incredible writer and loved to jot down short poems. His stories, laughter, corny dad jokes, and larger-than-life personality will echo in the hearts of those who loved him forever.

Jay died by suicide after struggling in ways that were not always visible to those around him. While we grieve the circumstances of his passing, we choose to remember the remarkable life he lived—the joy he brought to others, the love he shared, and the countless lives he touched.

He is survived by his daughter, Emily, and her children, Cali, Oliver, Esme, and Rosie; his son, Coy (Tawnee), and their daughter, Juliet; his parents, Rebecca and Dwaine Griffin, and Pat and Krissy Gentry; his brothers, Jeremy Griffin (Tanya), John Griffin, Jacob Gentry, and Colby Gentry; along with many beloved extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in imagining Jay where he was happiest—under an open sky, near the water, surrounded by the wildlife he cherished so deeply. His adventurous spirit and boundless love for life will remain with us always.

A celebration of Jay's life will be held on 7/12/2026 on Mexico Beach at sunset.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in Jay's memory, helping provide hope and support to individuals and families facing mental health challenges.

Jay lived loudly, laughed often, loved fiercely, and left the world with memories that will never fade. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will live on in every wave that reaches the shore, every act of kindness shown to an animal, every shared laugh among friends, and every spontaneous adventure taken in his honor.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
