John William Nixon Jr

John Nixon, Age 68, of Pensacola, FL passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 22,

2025, in the care of VITAS Hospice at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL.

John, born on January 30, 1957, in Pensacola, FL to Bill and Caryl Nixon, was the middle

child and only son of three children. He is survived by his daughter, Theresa Paige Nixon

Mule’ and her husband, Thomas, his mother, Caryl Huck Nixon, and his two sisters, Debra

Nixon Robinson, and Linda Nixon Ortman and her husband, Daniel. He is also survived by 5

nieces, Lindsay Robinson, Bailey Weems and her husband, Peyton, Samantha Ortman,

Megan Ortman and Emma Ortman and one great-niece, Ellie Weems, in addition to a large

loving family of cousins.

John graduated from University of West Alabama in Livingston, AL with a degree in

Biology/Environmental Science. He earned a Master of Science in Environmental

Management from Samford University in Birmingham, AL.

John’s 30+ year career in Environmental Management started at Waste Management in

Emelle, AL and created travel opportunities for him all over the world. He applied his

environmental management expertise consulting at US Military bases in Cheyenne, WY;

Kabul, Afghanistan; and Guantanamo, Cuba. He worked in Chicago, IL; Fernald, OH; New

Orleans, LA; Pensacola, FL; and the US Virgin Islands. He co-authored a university text and

was an adjunct professor at Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, AL, where he

helped educate the next generation of environmental scientists.

Between career opportunities and moves, Pensacola was John’s home base. He became

involved in local government in Escambia County asking local candidates to sign an

environmental pledge that would build consensus across political boundaries to reduce

pollution in the areas they serve.

John’s life will be celebrated with a memorial service on Saturday, January 31, 2026,

11:00am at Christian Valley Baptist Church, Coatopa, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations may

be made in John Nixon’s memory to the Community Missions Fund at Christian Valley

Baptist Church (cvbc-coatopa.org).
