Mary “Arleen” Smith passed away peacefully on December 8, 2025, at the remarkable age of 90. She leaves behind a legacy of creativity, and a life fully and uniquely lived. Arleen now joins her beloved husband, Arthur Frank Smith, and her cherished daughter, Shana Alicia Smith, in heaven.
Born in 1935, Arleen was a woman whose curiosity and artistic spirit never dimmed. A celebrated and award-winning painter, she also became an accomplished stained-glass artist whose pieces brightened the homes and hearts of many. Her creative pursuits extended far beyond the studio; she was the published author of The Collectibles Guide to Ceramic Fish and Mermaids from the 1950s, a niche but beloved reference that continues to delight collectors nationwide.
Arleen lived boldly at every age. At 70 years old, she enrolled in race car driving school—an adventure that perfectly captured her fearless, joyful approach to life. She also had a lifelong love of animals and spent many years raising and showing award winning German Shepherds, though she adored dogs of every breed, shape, and size.
She was a devoted mother and is survived by her children Steve Smith, Sheri Brown, and Shad Smith; her grandchildren Shanna Franceschini, Stacia Slaughter, Steven Smith, Matthew Brown, Sarah Craciunescu, Brennan Smith, and Tiffany Smith; and nine (soon to be ten) great-grandchildren who adored her. Her family will forever remember her artistic brilliance, her quick wit, and her love of all things purple.
A memorial celebrating Arleen’s life will be held Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at The Lodge at Camp Helen State Park. All who knew and loved her are welcome to attend.
Arleen asked that in lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter or adopt a pet!
