Sonya Christine Burnham

At just 54 years young, after fighting a fierce and faithful battle with remarkable grace, Sonya laid down her earthly suffering and was welcomed into the perfect, eternal embrace of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. There, she received the miracle she had long hoped and prayed for—not on this side of heaven, but in the presence of her Savior, where she was made completely whole.

Sonya was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, and cherished member of her community. She lived life with a larger-than-life personality, a generous heart, an unmistakable sense of humor, and enough sass to keep everyone around her on their toes.

Born in Naples, Italy, while her father was serving in the United States Navy, Sonya was raised in a military family whose journey took them across countries and communities. Her early years were filled with change, adventure, and new experiences as her family lived overseas and throughout different parts of the United States. Their travels eventually brought them to Virginia, including Hampton and Williamsburg, and later back to Key West, Florida, before settling in Milton, Florida. The many places Sonya called home shaped her perspective, her resilience, and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

During her school years, Sonya was involved in band and color guard, reflecting her spirited personality and her love for being part of something bigger than herself. She later continued her education through Locklin Vo-Tech School, an accomplishment she was proud of.

To know Sonya was to have a story about Sonya.

She had a way of making sure things were done the Sonya way. She was never one to quietly accept something she believed wasn’t right, and she had no hesitation in speaking up. Whether advocating for herself, creating the home she envisioned, or simply insisting that things be made right, she approached life with determination, confidence, and her own unforgettable flair. Her persistence, humor, and unmistakable personality were just a few of the qualities that made her so uniquely Sonya.

For many years, Sonya faithfully served her community as a school bus driver. What began as a job became a calling as she built lasting relationships with students, families, coworkers, and friends. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen, remembered, and valued, and the friendships she built over the years became one of life’s greatest treasures.

Sonya also had a way of making sure you never forgot about her, and she certainly never forgot about the people she loved. She formed friendships that lasted through decades and every season of life. No matter how much time passed, Sonya had a way of finding her way back, reaching out, and reminding people that the connection they shared still mattered. Her loyalty, persistence, and love for others were among the many qualities that made her friendships so special.

A creative spirit through and through, Sonya loved crafting, decorating, and bringing ideas to life. She found joy in creating beautiful things with her hands and was always dreaming of her next project. She loved the beach, sunshine, the sound of the waves, and the peace that came from being near the water. Her home reflected those things she loved most and became a welcoming place where family gathered, holidays were celebrated, and lasting memories were made.

Behind her determined personality was also a deeply generous heart. She freely shared her time, her talents, and the things she loved with others. She found joy in giving, encouraging, and helping those around her, often in quiet ways that meant more than she ever realized.

Above all else, Sonya loved her family. She was a devoted mother who loved her children deeply and treasured the special bond she shared with Raelynn. Nothing mattered more to her than knowing the people she loved would be cared for.

As she walked alongside her husband through his illness, Sonya’s faith grew into a deep and abiding trust in the Lord. Through life’s greatest joys and deepest sorrows, she found strength, comfort, and peace in God’s promises. That unwavering faith carried her through the loss of her husband, sustained her throughout her own courageous battle with cancer, and became an inspiration to those privileged to walk beside her.

The family is especially grateful for the compassionate care and support provided by People’s Hospice during her final days, from June 25 through July 5.

Though her family grieves her absence, they rejoice in knowing that Sonya is healed, whole, and finally home. Her legacy lives on in every story shared, every laugh remembered, every friendship she treasured, and every life she touched.

Sonya was preceded in death by her grandparents on both sides of her family, her parents, Richard and Sherry Starnes; her husband and love of her life, Curtis Burnham; her brother-in-law, Michael Whitfield; and her beloved grandson, Aiden Carter, whom she carried in her heart.

She is survived by her children, John Carter, Erika Carter, and Raelynn Burnham; her sisters, Susan Whitfield and Delia Herring; her nieces, Samantha Mitchell, Olivia Raughton, and Jolie Herring; her nephew, Garrett Whitfield; her  great-nephews, Moses, Reid, Elijah, and Garrison; and countless lifelong friends whose lives were forever enriched by knowing and loving her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Holley by the Sea August 2, 2026 at 5:45 PM. Please contact the family for more information.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 8:38–39
